Red Bull Bedroom Jam Festival tour bands announced

Earlier this year Sea Sessions Battle of the Bands teamed up with Red Bull to bring you the Red Bull Bedroom Jam. We can now announce that three young Irish bands will be heading out on the road for the best summer of their lives.

From  January 19th, fledgling Irish bands from Belfast to Bundoran and Dublin to Dunmore East, have been uploading their videos to redbullbedroomjam.ie. Six bands topped the buzz chart over the course of the competition and won a live recording from their bedrooms with the crew from Red Bull.

Since the 7th of May, 6 Buzz Chart finalists along with two wildcards selected by the judges have been involved in an online battle to take their acts from the bedroom to the front stage of Ireland’s key music festivals over the summer.

Each band will play one of the following Festivals – Sea Sessions, Glasgowbury and
Castlepalooza and all three bands will play Indiependence.

The winners are:

Dingle based band “Walking on Cars” – play Sea Sessions

Mullingar’s” Icon on Fire”

“In the Willows” from Waterford

The top three bands will go on to compete in the Red Bull Bedroom Jam Live
Final in Whelan’s, Dublin on Friday 16th of August where one overall winner will be chosen
to travel to one of the international Red Bull Studios for a week’s recording under the
auspices of a top producer.

We are delighted to welcome Walking on Cars to the Sea Sessions bill.

We love their sound and think they are ones to watch for sure, see what you think.

2012 is shaping up to be a big year for a Dingle-based band whose edgy acoustic rock, classical piano and polished pop sound have earned them major kudos on the national music scene.

Walking on Cars, who are tipped for big things by those in the know, had a very successful year in 2011, selling out a string of live gigs, not to mention their live performances alongside the likes of The Coronas, O Emperor and rock legends Whipping Boy.

The West Kerry five-piece comprises of Patrick Sheehy on vocals and rhythm guitar, Sorcha Durham on piano, Paul Flannery on bass guitar, Evan Hadnett on drums and Tom Kavanagh on lead guitar and backing vocals. “We had some great gigs last year, including one in France which was great. We had a house back west and over the past three months we have been writing and recording.

Our sound is modern pop/rock with very distinctive lead vocals. It’s a big sound with great emphasis on melodies and harmonies. We think our sound is going to be the soundtrack to 2012 so be prepared!

Tick, tick, tick, tick BOOM (7 wks to go)

The talented Mr. Squigley McHugh

What an action packed crazy fun month it has been. The inaugural Sea Sessions tour stopped off in Galway with Crazy P, Belfast with Tieranniesaur and Fujiya & Miyagi, then Kinsale and lastly Lahinch with the beat match master Ollie Teeba (The Herbaliser). We have made plenty of new friends along the way and hope to see most of you hit Bundoran in seven weeks time. Feels strange to say that, as it takes us the best part of a year to plan the festival. No time to rest now though, as we get ready to announce more acts, including day by day breakdown and the updated iPhone & Android app. Keep an eye on here over next week or two.

Check out the last leg of our tour. May bank holiday weekend saw us load up the Sea Sessions camper and go on a bit of a road trip.

Photos from Kinsale and Lahinch – get tagging.

3 good reasons to come to Sea Sessions

1. We have announced our line-up and we’re super excited to welcome the 2012 acts to Ireland’s biggest beach party. More acts to be announced next week, including day by day breakdown.

3 day weekend tickets are €88.50 and a day pass is €50

Memories OR some of what you missed from Sea Sessions 2011.

2. President of Ireland, Michael D. Higgins is to pop by on the Saturday of the festival and will give a speech. Wonder if he’ll be up for a surf lesson!!!

3. Don’t belive our hype! The Minutes are back again this year and here is why

Sea Seassions Heineken Tour with Fujiya & Miyagi and 24hrs in Belfast

The Sea Sessions crew arrived in Belfast on Saturday to set up and run the second leg of our Heineken Tour events. What follows are 24hrs with us in Belfast.

Top night in The Black Box with Brighton wonder boys Fujiya & Miyagi and almost local, Tieranniesaur. The Dublin collective warmed the crowd up nicely with their very unique brand of quirky Pop / Rock.

Tieranniesaur

Next up was Fujiya & Miyagi and they’re one of those bands that sound quite electronic but when you see it live it completely works but also sounds much rockier. Does that make sense? The vocals remind me of a 70′s band called Can but the music sound much more contemporary. Pulsating Bass, Heavy Guitar banging drums and a four four tempo. They were a great addition to the Sea Sessions list of acts and the Belfast crowd really took to them.

Fujiya and Miyagi

It’s kind of strange for Sea Sessions doing these gigs in Cities because we’re not by the sea or the beach but it’s definitely been worth it to bring a flavour of Sea Sessions and I guess a little taster of the big event. I’m looking forward to hearing  them on the main stage, Friday of the Festival. Next stops on the tour are Kinsale and Lahinch with the legendary DJ Herbaliser (May 5th and May 6th) and I expect that to be even closer to the real deal. There’s beaches, there’s surfers, there’s music we will party!! Bring it on!!! – words by Razor, Sea Sessions and Heineken Tour act booker.

Saturday

6pm – Dinner at Made in Belfast a self named ‘Restolounge’, with a tag line ”Food, Art, Music, Love”. Their food was fantastic, just simple fresh seasonal ingredients all put together in a creative somewhat funky taste explosion way. Don’t eat anywhere else in Belfast, especially if you are a foodie.

Made in Belfast - City Hall

8pm – Doors opened at The Black Box to an awaiting crowd who came to see 2012 Choice Music Prize nominee Tieranniesaur and Brighton boys Fujiya & Miyagi.

12am – Wandered round the atmospheric bars dotted around the Cathedral quarter, settling for a local favourite, John Hewitt bar, named after the late poet. Good selection of beers, that taste good too.

Late – What goes on tour stays on tour.

Sunday

The new Titanic Belfast building next to the Harland & Wolff shipyard where the Titanic was built. Irish Times photo.

So you’ve seen the film, sat through a documentary or two, maybe even been gifted a book about it for your birthday like me (thanks Aunty B.), and you reckon you’re fairly clued in on all things Titanic right? Well if you’re in Belfast anytime soon and fancy expanding that particular part of your grey matter, you could do far worse than a visit to the so-brand-spanking-new-it-hurts-your-eyes-to-look-at-it Titanic museum in Belfast.

This place opened a few weeks ago to as much of a frenzy as MTV could whip up. Ok, so it was the 100th anniversary of the ships departure from her birthplace in Belfast, where 15,000 hardy souls poured blood, sweat, tears, and in some cases, their lives, into building what still to this day is considered to be the fanciest, most spectacular, most posh, elegant, regal, you name it ship to have ever been built. Just a shame it also happened to be the most unlucky, or I’d probably have been stepping on to the ship itself for a tour 100 years on instead of into an ultra-modern building whose sole purpose is to pay homage to the one ship that has captured so many people’s imaginations.

Inside are a whopping 9 galleries covering all things Titanic, so if you’re brain hurts as much as mine did after three hours spent in there, my advice is to make use of the occasional period seating dotted around the place and just sit down, chill out, and take a breather, as there’s a lot to take in. The museum is interactive as well as visual, so you’ll be kept interested right the way through, and as if that wasn’t enough, the exhibition contains the world’s slowest rollercoaster ride…but I’ll say no more! Go check it out, and then rush home and watch that film you love to hate, or hate to love, all over again. Kate is mighty fine in it afterall ;)

24hrs was too short, Belfast is a great city with plenty to do and see. Hope to see you over the May bank holiday weekend in Cork or Lahinch. Wonder what we will get up to there, probably just surf.

Surfing & Action Sports Events

Barefoot Wine Expression Session in association with Billabong
The water is going to be just as hot as the music this year with Ireland’s largest cash prize in surfing on offer. Barefoot Wines have pulled out all the corks to get behind the landmark ‘Expression Session’ event which is the only surf competition in Ireland to be sanctioned by the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) Europe.

The Barefoot Wine Expression Session in association with Billabong will see the top surfers of Europe eyeing up the cash prize and taking each other on in a ‘best move wins’ viewer-friendly format. Prize fund includes 3,000 Euro total prize purse for the overall winner, as well as an 11 day surf cruise worth 2,200 Euro in sun-drenched North Sumatra for best Irish surfer. Go to www.tradewindadventures.com for more information.

Last year the Expression Session was the first speciality event ASP Europe endorsed in Ireland or the UK, and saw the best of Europe pitted against the best in Ireland and the UK. It’s a testament to the quality of the event that’s staged here in Bundoran and also the quality of the waves in the area that it’s happening again this year” said festival organiser and co-owner of Bundoran Surf Co. Pete Craig. “The format is simple; the best move/wave depending on conditions wins the heat, simple as.

Once again, this invite only event will further cement Ireland’s place as one of the world’s best surfing destinations whilst giving exposure to some of the best surfers that ride its waves. The event will be mobile, with a three day waiting period from Friday 29th June to Sunday 1st July. The possible surf contest areas will include, Tullan Strand, The Peak, Inside left and Main Beach. The Expression Session is structured to allow it to run in two hours to maximise the chances of calling it when the best waves and tides occur. We will announce when the contest is ‘ON’ as soon as possible, so keep an eye on event screens and online for updates during the festival weekend.

The event will be videoed for all to see, and will be posted online. ASP Europe will be in attendance giving all the competing surfers a chance to gain recognition on the Continent. The Event has a limited entry and no entry on the day is allowed, so if you are interested in getting involved email seasessionssurf@gmail.com.

Confirmed Surfers (to date)
Previous Expression Session winners Alan Stokes (Cornwall), and Cain Kilcullen (Co. Sligo) will this year be joined by Billabong Team rider Reubyn Ash (Cornwall) who is at the forefront of ariel surfing. More TBA.

Alan Stokes commenting on his 2011 win; “It is not a bad day’s work really,” laughed Stokes, “Stoked and really happy with the win. There were great waves in the end and it was good to have it on a wedge because it is high performance surfing and it all came good. It is my first trip to Bundoran, I love it and it is great. Guinness and waves I can do airs on is as good as it can get for me.

Retro Surf Event
A ‘retro event’ will take place on the Saturday of the Sea Sessions weekend, which will be open to all surfers and more based on style than explosive moves. We will aim to find the most graceful surfer, as the surf craft of choice will be 60′s and 70′s inspired boards. It will be a fun-filled event with lots of spot prizes from Barefoot Wine and Billabong. Entry is limited, so if you want to get involved email seasessionssurf@gmail.com.

Expect a mixture of food, shopping and displays to keep you entertained throughout the weekend as some of your favourite brands show off their wares.

Action Sports
Sea Sessions 2012 will again cater for the action sports fan with the return of the Skate and BMX displays. The crowd will not be left disappointed as the cream of extreme sports performers will wow and thrill spectators with the Adrenaline State High Octane BMX and Stunt Bike Display. ‘Adrenaline State’ brings the Ultra Dynamic Adrenaline Mash-Up to Sea Sessions this year. The multi-discipline biking spectacle will feature some of Europe’s best BMX, stunt and trials biking riders. Their playground will be an elaborate purpose-built course that includes anything from mashed-up cars and industrial electric spools, to ramp and kicker madness. Let the fun begin!

Sea Sessions on tour with Heineken | Crazy P

We were thrilled when Crazy P announced they’d do the first night of the Sea Sessions tour. The legendary live dance act hit the stage in the Roisin Dubh in Galway on Friday 13th, and were met by a wedged crowd who turned up to see the high-energy live show.

Front woman Danielle Moore said,

“It was wicked to play in Galway, we hadn’t been there in such a long time, and the crowd really loved the new material which was a big bonus for us. Now they’ll be singing along with me at Sea Sessions.”

Sea Sessions act booker Razor added,

“They’re one of my favorite bands and one of the best live acts out there. I’ve been lucky enough to see them at least a dozen times now and they just seem to get better. It’s proper live Disco. I love when people see them for the first time because they’re usually blown away by them and they become fans. Looking forward to Crazy P at the festival proper. The Black Box in Belfast this Saturday 21st with Fujiya & Miyagi and Tieranniesaur for more Sea Sessions action and some surfing hotspots over the next couple of weeks. Can’t wait!!!”

Check out what the night was all about, and a taster of what to expect from our tour gigs.

Dreams are made of… XXL photos

andrew_cotton_billabongxxl_thumb

Surf Photographer and Co. Clare native David Olsthoorn tells Sea Sessions about his rollercoster winter in the North West, capturing the many moods of the waves that crash against its coastline.

The last few months have been a rollercoaster of mad events. I left my Clare home in mid November to spend two or three days in Bundoran with Lyndon Wake & Andrew Cotton. This turned into two weeks which then turned into an ongoing yoyo like affair between Lahinch & Bundoran for the following three months. My poor car ‘Emma’ has seen more miles this winter than any other and could probably drive the three and a half hour drive to Bundoran herself now.

“The long dark road in search of a nice sunrise and good waves”

“Bundorans not a bad spot when the sun shines”

Although I try to keep positive as much as possible I have to admit I had my worst week earlier this month. We had a long stint of terrible waves and I lost all thirst to get in the water and turned to spending hours on my laptop & drinking tea. I actually had so much time on my hands that I started to write a book and got 8 288 words into it. Lyndon Wake had left the house because he needed to get work done at home and Andrew Cotton was also not feeling the stoke and wanted to go back home to his pregnant girlfriend Katie. We saw a long forecast chart for some big swell and decided to stay. The chart for that ‘big Thursday’ was a bit strange the night before. Nothing was certain so when we woke up to amazing waves it was such a relief. All the patience had paid off. We got out there straight away and Cotty got this bomb almost instantly. Usually I never think about shots till I’m back on the computer later that evening, but the moment Cotty let go of that rope I knew this was serious. I knew this was the biggest wave I’d ever seen and taken a photo of.

“My shot of Andrew Cotton riding the beast at Mullaghmore that got him into the Billabong XXL Awards”

The rest of the session was amazing and along with the regular local crews it also had people like Tom Butler from England & Ollie O Flaherty from Lahinch getting some of the waves of there lives. It was great to see such young lads pushing it in conditions like that. The session went on for a good few hours and luckily everyone went home with no injury’s just a lot of stoke!

“Tom Butler after getting the wave of his life had a few more waves. This was one he took on the head”

“The Beautiful Beast of Mullaghmore”

The following day Cotty left for England and I felt like I was good to go home too. I felt like after months in Bundoran with all them times spent putting on icy cold wetsuits at a pier at 6am in the morning had all paid off. As I packed all my gear up and prepared to get ‘Emma’ on the road for her final journey home I got a call from Wavelength Magazine Editor Greg who told me I had got the cover shot. What perfect news to drive home to and end to my winter in Bundoran.

The next few days brought more exciting news when I got my photo in the Billabong XXL awards. I still can’t really get over this. I can’t believe I’m in the same pot as photographers like Tim McKenna who I’ve drooled on magazine pages because of.

“Perfect”

Looking back on this winter it’s mental to think that I’ve got two covers and a picture in the XXL awards and I only just turned 20. This is going to be a cracking story for the grandchildren.

Sea Sessions Nominated for ‘Best Small Festival’ & announces battle of the bands

festival_graphic

Now in its 5th year, SEA SESSIONS SURF MUSIC FESTIVAL is once again gearing up to be one of the hottest festivals of the summer. Following the success of the award winning festival’s 2011 stellar line-up, event organisers are pulling out all the stops to bring you what promises to be this year’s biggest beach party, jam-packed with exciting activities and pumping tunes all in the surrounds of beautiful Bundoran, Co. Donegal!

LAUNCH PAD FOR IRISH ACTS: Over the years, Sea Sessions has proven to be a major launch-pad for Irish talent, and this year is no different, with the announcement that three of the acts who played last year; BELL X1, CASHIER No 9, and THE JAPANESE POPSTARS, have been nominated for a Choice Music Prize.

The organisers have always been inundated with requests from Irish acts looking to get in on the party in Bundoran, and as a result Sea Sessions have joined forces with Red Bull Bedroom Jam to bring you a battle of the bands with a difference.

The competition is open to acts nationwide, from Bundoran to Bandon, and Derry to Dublin, where young local bands will be given the opportunity to get a leg-up the music ladder, and into the industry.  With a prize that will take them onto the stage at Sea Sessions 2012 and eventually one of them into a recording studio, this could be a real life changing experience for many.

Sea Sessions co-organiser Daniel Brown welcomes Red Bull Bedroom Jam as an exciting new addition to the festivals popular battle of the bands competition; “Over the past few years we have supported home-grown acts on stage and behind the scenes with Niamh Hamill literally listening to thousands of band entries, and it’s fantastic to see our hard work and commitment being recognised and supported by a major brand like Red Bull. We are delighted to be working with Red Bull on what is a real and exciting opportunity for up and coming Irish acts to showcase their talent.”

The focus of the competition, along with making and sharing great music, is to successfully market your band online, using the power of social media. This is a battle of the bands that is not just about voting; it’s a complete social media experience.

Fledgling Irish bands (all members aged 17+, with one member aged under 25), can upload a video to the competition website www.redbullbedroomjam.ie, and from February 27th all activity or ‘buzz’ will then be monitored and displayed in a league format on the bi-weekly Bedroom Jam Buzz Chart. Bands will be encouraged to share and promote their music online, which in turn generates buzz and moves them up the league table.

The six bands which generate the most ‘buzz’ will be filmed live from the comfort of their own homes, while the world watches online. From those six, three will be chosen by Red Bull’s panel of expert judges to perform at the biggest Irish music festivals of 2012, including Sea Sessions.

Finally, one band will be crowned winners at a live final next Autumn, winning a week long recording session with a top producer in the Red Bull Studios. This is a prize like no other so bands…get uploading, and you could be on the way to the biggest year of your lives!

LAMA AWARDS:
The 2012 Local Authority Members Association (LAMA) Awards have announced that Sea Sessions are among the finalists for the Best Tourist Attraction category.

At the launch LAMA spoke about how they are once again “delighted to bring forth the LAMA Awards, now in their sixth year, where we hope to further highlight and recognise excellence at local, county and national level.”

The annual LAMA Awards ceremony commends individuals, initiatives, private companies and people, for their outstanding contributions and projects of benefit to the community.

Sea Sessions co-organiser Daniel Brown explains,

“Failte Ireland have been hugely supportive of what we have created here in Bundoran. They have helped us every step of the way to grow and promote Irelands biggest beach party. The local Council in the town have been really progressive as well. It is only with forward thinking support like this that award winning events like Sea Sessions can thrive”

IRISH FESTIVAL AWARD:

The Sea Sessions team had the honour of scooping the award for Best Small Festival at last year’s Irish Festival Awards and once again we have been nominated for six gongs and would like your VOTE. The Irish Festival Awards honour the organisers and people behind the scenes of the Irish Summer festivals.

Sea Sessions has been shortlisted in the following categories:
